Serita Ann Jakes was born on August 19, 1955, in Beckley, West Virginia. Her mother passed away from Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a condition causing nerve damage, paralysis, and muscle weakness. Little is known about her mother, but her father worked as a coal miner.
Sadly, Serita’s older brother was killed in a shooting in front of his kids while she was in college. Grieving these losses, she entered an abusive relationship with a teenage boy.
During her childhood, Serita faced bullying because of her weight. In an attempt to fit in, she turned to sex, drugs, and alcohol. However, her life took a significant turn after she was baptized and experienced a spiritual rebirth.
In an interview with Called Magazine, Serita shared that although she was raised in the church, she went astray after joining the wrong crowd. She explained, “I got in with the wrong crowd and started doing their thing, which I thought was my thing, and it was too fast for a little ole country girl like me.”
