As a proponent of the prosperity gospel, Dollar teaches that God intends for Christians to be financially prosperous and physically healthy. He emphasizes faith and giving, encouraging followers to donate financially to his ministry. However, the prosperity gospel’s teachings have faced criticism within the Christian community for focusing on material wealth and potential exploitation of followers.

Ministry

Pastor Dollar was an entrepreneur before entering ministry, starting World Changers Ministries Christian Center in 1986.

The first worship service was held in the cafeteria of Kathleen Mitchell Elementary School in College Park, attended by eight people. Over time, Dollar renamed the ministry World Changers Church International (WCCI).

The congregation moved from the cafeteria to a dedicated chapel, and Four services are held each Sunday, along with a weekly radio broadcast.

In 1995, WCCI relocated to the current 8,500-seat World Dome, which cost close to $20 million and was not financed by a bank, according to the church.

As of 2007, the church reported around 30,000 members and gross monetary receipts of $70 million in 2006.

In October 2012, Creflo Dollar Ministries leased Loews Paradise Theater in the Bronx for a new church facility in New York.

Apart from leading the church, Dollar is involved in televangelism, conferences, and writing about prosperity theology, known for controversial teachings.

In 2017, rumors circulated about Pastor Dollar’s death in a plane crash, stating his private jet had crashed shortly after take-off from Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, Atlanta.

Controversy

Dollar has faced criticism for leading a lavish lifestyle, owning two Rolls-Royce vehicles, a private jet, and expensive properties, including a million-dollar home in Atlanta, a $2.5 million home in Demarest, New Jersey, and a Manhattan residence purchased for $2.5 million in 2006 (equivalent to $3.4 million in 2021).

Despite his opulent lifestyle, Dollar does not disclose his earnings. Creflo Dollar Ministries received a grade of “F” for financial openness as it refused to provide any financial information for an independent audit.

In 2007, Dollar, along with five other televangelists, was under inquiry led by United States Senator Chuck Grassley of Iowa. Grassley sought financial information to determine if Dollar personally profited from donations, with a deadline of December 6, 2007. The investigation included Benny Hinn, Kenneth Copeland, Eddie L. Long, Joyce Meyer, and Paula White.

Dollar contested the probe, arguing that the IRS, not the Committee on Finance, should examine religious groups. Dollar and three others were uncooperative, and the investigation concluded in 2011 without any charges.
