Matthew James Redman grew up in Watford, England, and later moved to Chorleywood with his family when he was about two. Unfortunately, his father passed away when he was seven, and his mother remarried into a challenging relationship, leading to family struggles and a subsequent divorce.
At the age of ten, after attending a mission service led by Luis Palau at London’s QPR football stadium, Redman became a Christian. In his teens, he was encouraged to lead worship by Mike Pilavachi, a youth leader at an Anglican church.
Redman started attending St Andrew’s Chorleywood Anglican church, where he began playing the guitar. By the time he was 20, he was leading worship services and releasing his first record. In 1993, alongside Pastor Mike Pilavachi, Redman co-founded Soul Survivor, a global Christian movement and annual music festival for teenagers. From 1994 to 2002, he served as the worship leader at Soul Survivor Church in Watford, England.
